Professional problems in the modern world
It is well known fact, that humanist occupations are very profitable nowadays. Since school a lot of people consider this speciality to be very absorbing. With such an point of view they are brought up in their families, go to high school, to a university and finally they begin bringing up their own children that way. Impasse.
Why is it so? What do make people think that technological sciences have lost their importance?
There are several reasons.
first modern engineering achieved such a high degree of progress that the majority of people is capable of using it without having specialized technical skill. Consequently there is no point for further diffusion of engineering skill. Humanits use starts prevailing in all spheres of life.
Secondly it is an well known fact that we live in the consumer society. People in it don’t want to work with their hands. They prefer to explain the world around and use products, but not to make something by themselves. Naturally this phenomenon does not affect positively on diffusion of engineering knowledge. People are simply not interested in it.
Thirdly the resource base has achieved such a level of devastation that we often have no place for practice after studying the theory.
Finally a very major thing is the policy of the government. What professions does it popularize as needed today? We can easily get to know it by watching our mass-media. The internet, the television, the radio, the press – what ways of life do they promote today? It is easy to prove that they are full of humanist images. Mass-media present us pleasant, nice way of life in which there is no place for hard-work, but there are a lot of talks, beautiful scenes and fantasies.
What do we have as a result?
Lack of trained workers in the technological sphere. There are a lot of philosophers, lawyers, artists, singers, politicians, professors but a few people, able to operate for example a jointer planer. This will cause a perilous situation when we will be lacking very simple things which are very important for our comfortable existence.
Besides that our education system is totally destroyed. There is no technical literature of high quality – it is either sold or lost. There is no qualified lecturers able to train adequate personnel working in non-humanist spheres.
Such is the picture. Sad, isn’t it?
Then, there is an adequate question: what should our country do in order to correct the condition? I think that there are several actions to be taken. firstly our education system should change its attitude towards technical professions and specialities and theirs perspectives. Then our country should do its best in order to popularize technical professions in mass-media.
And of course, the best way to save engineering specialities is to assign enough means both for the payment for the people who work in this sphere and to the creating an adequate resource base.
